VRS8 Commonly Asked Questions

How do I connect via PCIE?

The VRS8 only supports Thunderbolt 2 and 3 (via adaptor) on Mac only.

We include the PCIE card with the VRS8 purchase as it's required for use with PCs.

Note: Thunderbolt is not supported on PCs.

Will the VRS8 work with Thunderbolt 1 Macs?

No, the VRS8 requires either Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3.

I have an i5 processor, will the VRS8 work on my system?

Yes, the VRS8 will work with an i5 processor as we have customers utilizing this with success. We do recommend a i7 processor for optimal performance as this will be able to handle much larger sessions.

Does the VRS8 include a Thunderbolt cable?

The VRS8 does not include a Thunderbolt cable, you will need to purchase this separately.

Which Thunderbolt Cable/Adaptor does Slate Digital recommend?

We recommend using the official Apple Thunderbolt cable and the official Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor

Why doesn’t the VRS8 have digital I/O like SPDIF or ADAT?

The VRS8 was created to be a native interface that boasts an incredible roundtrip latency as low as .7ms.

In order to do that, we created a direct chipset to handle the audio which we’ve named Low Latency Native or LLN. However, in order to maintain this low latency path, we could not interrupt the chipset with an external digital signal without compromising LLN.

My VRS8(s) gets really hot, is something wrong?

No, this is totally normal and should not cause any issues, however it's not recommended to place it directly under your computer. If you're using multiple units, it's advised (but not required) to leave 1 RU of space in between the units if you have the available space

Can I use the VRS8 in Standalone Mode?

No, the VRS8 does not operate in standalone mode. In order to use the VRS8, you'll need to connect the unit to a computer with a thunderbolt cable. The inputs do not fall down to their corresponding output path as all routing is done in your DAW.

Can I connect multiple VRS8s for more I/O?

Yes this is possible (for Mac only). Please see the following article for more information:

Note: The PCIe protocol limits the use of multiple units on PC machines.
